Tomographic errors from wave front healing: more than just a fast bias
نویسندگان
چکیده
Wavefront healing, in which diffractions interfere with directly traveling waves causing a reduction in recorded traveltime delays, has been postulated to cause a bias towards faster estimated Earth models. This paper reviews the theory from the mathematical physics community that explains the properties of diffractions and applies it to a suite of increasingly complicated numerical examples. We focus in particular on the elastic case and on the differences between P and S healing. We find that rather than introducing a systemic fast bias, wavefront healing gives a more complicated bias in the results of traveltime tomography, with fast anomalies even manifesting themselves as slow anomalies in some situations. Of particular interest, we find that a negative correlation between the bulk and shear or compressional velocities may result to a large extend from healing.

Imaging seismic velocity structure beneath the Iceland hot spot: A finite frequency approach
[1] Tomographic models based on hypothetically infinite frequency ray interpretation of teleseismic travel time shifts have revealed a region of relatively low P and S wave speeds extending from shallow mantle to 400 km depth beneath Iceland. In reality, seismic waves have finite frequency bandwidths and undergo diffractive wave front healing. The limitation in ray theory leaves large uncertain...
متن کاملIterative Tomographic Image Reconstruction Using Nonuniform Fast Fourier Transforms
Fourier-based reprojection methods have the potential to reduce the computation time in iterative tomographic image reconstruction. Interpolation errors are a limitation of Fourier-based reprojection methods. We apply a min-max interpolation method for the nonuniform fast Fourier transform (NUFFT) to minimize the interpolation errors. Numerical results show that the min-max NUFFT approach provi...
متن کاملInfluence of observed mantle anisotropy on isotropic tomographic models
[1] There is a potential for isotropic tomographic models to be biased by ignored anisotropy; anisotropy could be mapped as artificial isotropic velocity perturbations. We investigate the distribution and strength of this potential bias for three tomographic S velocity models based on regional S and Rayleigh waveforms. We use observed SKS delay times and fast-axis orientations to compute equiva...

In this paper a method for digitally recording four quarter-reference-wave-holograms (by CCD) in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer setup, and reconstructing the object wave-front by numerical method is presented. The terms of direct transmission, auto-correlation and conjugate wave in the four wave reconstruction are cancelled out and only one original object wave is left after overlapping. Reconst...
متن کاملGlobal P and PP traveltime tomography: rays versus waves
S U M M A R Y This paper presents a comparison of ray-theoretical and finite-frequency traveltime tomography for compressional waves. Our data set consists of 86 405 long-period P and PP–P traveltimes measured by cross-correlation. The traveltime of a finite-frequency wave is sensitive to anomalies in a hollow banana-shaped region surrounding the unperturbed ray path, with the sensitivity being...
